Once you have a building built, you have to hit the plus button to assign a family to work there. This takes one of the unassigned families and makes them dedicated to working at that building. They still tend the garden or livestock on their burgage plots and, more importantly, if you pause or remove the assignment from the building, they’ll go back to the unassigned pool. It is what you would imagine from older TV shows when they show children playing in a tree house. It is more open so it wouldn’t be something that could be used for adult social gatherings. Instead, as the name implies, it’s about wealth instead of just money and that wealth comes from either exporting surplus goods or just from upgrading burgage plots.

So, if you are looking to invest a healthy dose of money into a modern tree house then this could be the plans for you. This little tree house looks like it could come right out of a magazine. If you want something that will add charm to your home then this tree house will certainly do that. This tree house would be a great place to have social gatherings for people of all ages. How much does it cost to create tree diagrams with the tree diagram maker?

Once you've drawn the basic shape of your tree, it's time to bring it to life by adding textures and details. This is where the tree brush Procreate tool really shines. With the right brush strokes and layering, you can create a tree that looks like it's popping right off the screen. Once you do start upgrading burgage plots, though, the families on that plot will expect two kinds of food to be available from then on.

Some of them are literally houses you can spend the night in and others that are simply decks that can be built in one weekend. Some of them are for children and the others are perfect for adults. You can put everything from a gravel or bark mulch to building a decking around a tree to prevent weeds. Espaliered trees are trained to grow against a wall and as such have a large, rectangular border around the base.

This also allows you to add details and textures to each part individually, making your tree look more realistic. Think of burgage plots as mixed-used zoning where your town’s families will build houses and workshops. Depending on the size and shape of the burgage plot, there might be room for additional housing (adding a house for a second family to the plot) or an extension (for a garden or a workshop). Made up of leafy branches with silk leaves, this faux olive tree comes in a taupe gray cement planter pot that makes the tree elegant and chic. Only about two to three small drops are needed when you apply the Ghost Oil, and you don't have to necessarily use it every day to see results. A few times a week is a doable amount to achieve results you're happy with. Cristina Montemayor is a beauty and grooming expert with over five years of experience testing and writing about hair products. For this story, she tested over 20 hair creams on a variety of hair types, and she also talked to a panel of three hair stylists on their recommendations. Montemayor is also a full-time makeup artist and hairstylist, so she absolutely knows what she's talking about.

Coconut Milk & Turmeric Curls 2-in-1 Shampoo

Containing Kakadu Plum, the brand recommends using daily to see effective results. While pomades are great for adding hold and grit to a hairstyle, they tend to be overly drying. Baxter of California wisely took all the benefits of a pomade and combined it with the moisture-rich properties of a styling cream to create this 2-in-1 cream pomade. Kinky and curly hair loves moisture, which is why hydrating conditioners are so important for both the health and appearance of your curls. Applying this leave-in treatment can help give your hair the extra boost of moisture its thirsting for.

On the flip side, if you have thick or coarse hair, your best men’s hair product for curls will come in the form of something thicker or weightier. Something like a heavy-duty wax or viscous oil will do the best job of taming that mane. For all-round powerful curl maintenance, Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream is the top choice.

Ask your barber to use scissors to cut the sides slightly shorter than the top, but leave enough length that they can be slicked back. Use a volumizing spray on the top as well as a styling cream or curl cream to create hold. Bonus points if you can get even more volume by using a hair dryer. Instead of keeping hair too short to curl, this longer variation of a classic crew cut allows natural texture to show through, especially on top.

You want your curls to look groomed, but also might want a routine that’s easy to sustain and maintain! And as a side note, we’ve found that life (and a hair routine!) gets a lot easier when you stop trying to work against your unique features, and when you embrace and enhance what you’ve got! And for this, curly hair products for men are the answer for those blessed with natural-born ringlets. If you’ve got a young man with developing type 3 curls then this is a great shampoo for teaching a simple and effective hair regimen. Young King formulates their product, especially for curly and textured hair, and uses simple ingredients like coconut oil, rosemary oil, and avocado oil for a moisturized cleanse.

All the big sellers promise instantaneous improvement of your hair’s health in every segment, from softness to volume. In putting together this list of the best conditioners for curly hair men, I made sure to look at the most respectable brands, and I paid close attention to what customers had to say. Each product does a slightly different job and suits slightly different hair types. Take the time to explore each product and you might even find more than one that will help you level up your curl-boosting grooming routine.

Use a high-hold product, like a matte-finish pomade, to slick the sides back with your hands, along with a styling cream on the top to give a more natural appearance. Still ask your barber to avoid clippers and use scissors to create this crop to preserve some of the natural texture even when it’s short. Note that there is little to no fade—you want a uniform length on the sides with only slightly more on top. When it comes to caring for extremely dry hair, shampoo and conditioner can use some additional help. Moisturizing hair masks work wonders to deeply condition and restore your strands with hydration in just a few minutes. For men with facial hair, especially if it’s natural textured, a beard balm is an absolute must.

This cut shares a similar shape with the previous style, but isn’t quite as finished. You still want enough length that your hair can fully curl several times (or if you have wavy hair, it has a defined wave). Use a salt spray or a light styling cream on damp hair and let it air dry naturally for this devil-may-care look. Case in point, this style that uses natural curl to its advantage to create height on top.

Leave the top long enough that hair can have a few full curls and the sides only slightly shorter. To style, spray a volumizing spray on damp hair and then use a curl cream to create smooth, defined curls. If you find that your curly hair is dry and prone to frizz, it’s a great idea to apply a hydrating hair oil as the finishing touch to your curly hair care routine.

Now, he tests thousands of products a year—and even got a hair transplant in the name of “research”. He currently lives in Berlin, Germany but is a native of Sioux Falls, SD. Now, when I say weight, I mean the weight of the product itself rather than the container. Again, depending on the type of curls or hair you have, you will need a ‘density’ to suit. If you have fine curls, for instance, a lighter shampoo or milder hair oil will likely do the trick. If you’re prone to the kind of curls that turn into a frizzed-up broccoli floret, OGX’s formula will tame flyaways, keep your mane at bay, and boost the best parts of your curly locks.

Using background shapes in this way will not only give your icons some room to breathe, but it will also make them a lot more eye-catching. Without the border shapes in the example above, the icons would have just faded into the background. So if you use a flat icon in one section, use flat icons throughout your poster and vice versa. Your Guide to Army Grooming Standards Including Latest Changes

Yet, critics of the changes were quickly vocal, arguing that the soldiers looked scruffy, while others suggested the "standards" of the British military would suffer. Teresa Tennyson is a retired army officer who served in several countries in the Middle East. As an Arabic lingual and cultural specialist, her assignments included combat deployments and a diplomatic tour. Soldiers with religious accommodations can wear long-sleeved Army physical fitness uniform (APFU) tops and subdued leggings under APFU shorts.

“This is not just about hair, it’s about acknowledgement of personal rights, it’s about checking bias," California State Sen. Holly Mitchell previously told USA TODAY. “Some male Soldiers in certain occupation specialties rely on their hands, which are under constant bombardment while working with tools or harsh chemicals,” Sanders said. “A male Soldier would take this opportunity to keep their nails protected." "I use the analogy, 'If you look good, you feel good -- and if you feel good, you perform [well]," Sanders said. "If I am in the Army long enough, it would be nice to see how these changes have improved productivity ... and make Soldiers perform better."

Army authorizes female Soldiers ponytails in all uniforms

Soldiers with religious accommodations can grow their mustaches to connect with their beards, but they must trim or groom mustaches to keep them above upper lip lines. In addition, soldiers can not shape their facial hair into goatees, handlebar mustaches or other styles. In addition to an update in hair regulations, The Army is introducing a wide range of changes to the uniform and grooming regulations. They expect all soldiers to always maintain a uniform and professional look. A recent update to grooming standards is the removal of female members having to observe a minimum length of 1/4 inch from the scalp. Females are currently authorized to wear earrings when wearing their service, dress, mess, and evening mess uniforms.

Army announces new grooming, appearance standards

Earrings will remain unauthorized in field environments, combat-related deployments or locations where access to normal hygiene is not available. Soon, all soldiers will also be able to dye their hair any natural color, and female soldiers can wear lipstick and nail polish in approved colors. Bold colors such as purple, blue, pink, green, orange, bright red and neon colors are still not permitted. The updated standard will also allow females with long hair the option to wear a ponytail while wearing an Army Combat Uniform during physical training, or while wearing tactical headgear during tactical training or combat operations. The Army defines long hair as a length that extends beyond the collar. Army standards require this hairstyle to be neatly and inconspicuously fastened above the collar's lower edge.

Along with hair standards, the Army is allowing women to wear lipstick and nail polish — something that used to be allowed but was later outlawed. The new standards will also allow men to wear clear nail polish if they wish, which could be used to protect their nails if they “serve in the job specialties that have to deal with harsh chemicals,” for instance. Leadership at all levels is responsible for enforcing the army hair policy. All soldiers will comply with hair, fingernail, and grooming policies in military uniform or civilian clothes on duty.

Approved hairstyle changes include no minimum hair length for female Soldiers, allowing multiple hairstyles at once (i.e. braiding, twists or locs). Soldiers will be able to wear ponytails if unable to form a bun, and may wear long ponytails while conducting physical training, in the combat uniform or when female Soldiers wear equipment such as, but not limited to, combat helmets. The grooming standard changes make it easier and safer for women to secure natural hair of all types in garrison and combat headgear.

Wigs are also authorized so long as they look natural and once again conform to standard hair regulations. Thus, U.S. Army hair regulations, facial hair, and other accessories (makeup, fingernails, etc) are considered daily essentials in order to maintain a high-functioning, well-disciplined unit. Hair regulations are meant to reinforce uniformity in the military, but many women — specifically Black women — have said that the stringent regulations don’t take into account different textures and lengths of hair. Mady Segal, a military sociologist and professor emerita at University of Maryland, College Park, said it's an "excellent step forward," but worries that many of these guidelines are specific to women and not inclusive to male soldiers. The U.S. Army this week unveiled an updated grooming policy that is set to go into effect in late February. The new policy also removes hair length and dimension requirements and allows ponytails and earrings.

To ensure a standard of equity and based on a July 2020 DoD-directed review, the Army has updated the grooming and hairstyle policies. The updates directly supports the Army’s diversity and inclusion efforts. Under the current policy, female soldiers' hair cannot be shorter than one-forth of an inch or have braids, twists, locks or cornrows that are wider than half an inch.

AR 670-1 Female Hair Regulation

U.S. Army hair regulations and grooming standards are comparable to other branches of the Armed Forces. If the headgear does not fit the intended shape or has excessive gaps, female soldiers will be expected to conform their haircut to acceptable standards immediately. Army soldiers are allowed to wear braids, cornrows, dreadlocks, and twists, yet the types of hairstyles are closely regulated by the military branch. The updated standard will also include a link to imagery and videos to provide Soldiers with specific examples of proper grooming and appearance standards, Sanders said. Current images are too vague, outdated, and leave too much room for interpretation without adequate guidance. According to the updated policy, extreme colors and nail shapes, such as a coffin, ballerina, and stiletto nails, are prohibited while in uniform or on duty in civilian clothes.

If the Soldier were to washout or graduate from training, their hair was often below the 1/4 inch minimum length requirement and outside Army regulations. Panel findings determined that females attending Ranger, Special Forces, or Sapper training were often encouraged to cut their hair to abide by health and hygiene recommendations while training in an austere environment, Sanders said. That sentiment was shared by author Benny Bough, who has studied the history of British military regulations. "British and Canadian traditions only allow pioneers to have beards," said David Hiorth, owner of Military Antiques Toronto, and noted expert of British and Canadian military traditions. "This is how the world is digressing by allowing this change. Hopefully, the pendulum will swing back the other way." Throughout the 20th century and to the modern day, infantry pioneer warrant officers, colour sergeants, and sergeants traditionally wear and were permitted to wear beards; although not compulsory, most do wear them.

The Army plans to authorize the wear of highlights if it presents a natural appearance and is not a prohibited color, Sanders said. Further, if a Soldier decides to color or highlight their hair, root growth of a different color should not exceed 1.5 inches of the original color. Under the new policy, medium-length ponytails are only authorized for wear on the back of the scalp and cannot exceed the head's width or interfere with the proper wear of a Soldier's headgear. WASHINGTON -- New changes to grooming and appearance standards are slated to take effect next month, as part of the Army’s commitment to improve the wellbeing of all Soldiers. Reactions across social media were, not all that unsurprisingly, mixed.

Hair-holding devices are allowed only for the purpose of securing the hair for longer lengths. It’s defined as a hair length that extends beyond the lower edge of the collar. The hairstyle is not considered acceptable if when combed it falls over the ears or eyebrows, or touches the collar. And as Peters said at Military.com back in August, Black women “have not always had a voice,” but “the one thing they have always controlled and taken pride in is their hair. “The words ‘extreme’ and ‘exaggerated’ are sufficient when describing violations to the Grooming and Appearance Standard,” the slides say. Grinston teased that changes were coming on Twitter last week, saying hair is “absolutely” something the team leading the Army’s Project Inclusion initiative were working on.

The shift back to allowing beards across the ranks isn't due to historical significance entirely. “Commanders will analyze the risk of a free hanging ponytail or braid and use commander’s discretion to determine if long hair will be secured or tucked inside the uniform top,” said Sanders. After speaking with Marine and Coast Guard women, she was advised to create a strong visual presentation. And as for any soldiers — particularly former soldiers — who think these changes are just the Army’s effort to be “politically correct,” or want to talk about how the Army isn’t the same as when you were in?

Brass and copper details shine, scrubbed wood and stone add warmth and texture, while those on-display ingredients add tasty pops of color. Chairs are traditional in style, with rush seats and bentwood or ladder back frames – although a pew seat picked up from a country brocante may well make an appearance. Consider suspending an oversized pendant light or antique chandelier over a timeworn farmhouse table for the perfect high-low design mix. French country kitchens often feature large decorative canopies over the hob and elaborate, decorative light fixtures in vintage brass or iron.

The trick to making it look real is the irregularity of the stone pattern. Look for authentic gilded pieces, but that will be seriously expensive. Instead, you can blend modern touches, such as gold hardware for the cabinets. Look for fixtures with intricate details and traditional styling to keep the gold fixtures in line with the rest of the kitchen. Then you can have elegant chairs to place around it, upholstered with a French voile fabric. You could hang a wrought iron rack above your kitchen island and hang the copper cooking tools from the hooks.

Installing a ceiling hanging pot rack is common in French country kitchens. By storing pots, pans, and utensils overhead,  you can maximize the available storage space in the kitchen. Plus, vintage pieces often have a rustic or weathered look that contributes to a warm and inviting atmosphere in the kitchen. You will often find these items on yard sales, vintage sites or auctions.

However, there is some more leeway granted for female authorized hairstyles within the Army. All in all, the manual is fairly straightforward yet detailed in providing what is acceptable or unacceptable for Army hair regulations in 2023. Many changes have been made recently in an effort to be more inclusive of all backgrounds. The fundamental belief that all Army uniforms and personal appearance must be “neat and well-groomed” has served as a vital ingredient in making the U.S. Armed Forces one of the most cohesive and dedicated military forces in all of the world.

Soldiers may not change their hair color to outlandish ones such as purple, pink, green, orange, bright red, or fluorescent or neon colors. Senior Army leaders are discussing making long-awaited changes to hair and grooming regulations and they plan to announce the finalized changes in January 2021, Task & Purpose has learned. "We're looking at, you know, a future of women that will have healthier hair," Barber, an Army Reserve captain, said. "It's important for us to feel like we can walk into the military ... and feel confident in the way that we look and we're not sacrificing our appearance or our hair health." Female Soldiers will soon be authorized to wear earrings with their ACU.

The wearing of facial hair came after senior UK military figures lifted the British Army's 100-year ban on serving soldiers having beards. According to the UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD), the change was backed by General Sir Patrick Sanders, Chief of the General Staff, and it went as high as the Commander-in-Chief, King Charles. WASHINGTON – The U.S. Army today announced an update to its grooming policy, which now allows female Soldiers to wear ponytails in all authorized U.S. Now, the National Guard Bureau action officer is the face of the updated regulation, pictured wearing a formerly unauthorized hairstyle that was approved largely due to her persistent efforts. And they will be able to wear combinations of styles, such as locs pulled back in a ponytail, which for years were off limits. The new rules allow short ponytails at all times, and long ponytails in combat and in training when a bun might otherwise interfere with equipment.

Army Beard and Mustache Regulations

The U.S. Army will loosen restrictions on lipstick, nail polish and protective hairstyles in an effort to promote gender and racial inclusion. Women are now also cleared to wear earrings — gold, silver, and diamond — in their combat uniform, a move which had never been done before, Sanders said. That does not apply to combat uniforms in a training or combat environment. In addition, the revised regulation will not contain potentially offensive language used to describe several hairstyles – for example, “Mohawk, eccentric, faddish, Fu Manchu, dreadlock” – which will be replaced with alternative verbiage. If wearing the APFU as a complete uniform, retirees must abide by the standards of AR 670-1, but they can add approved retired shoulder-sleeve insignia and identification badges.

Senior leaders recently approved the changes recommended by the panel of soldiers of different races and cultural backgrounds, and from different ranks and career fields, the Army said. The process included dermatologists, a psychologist and an equal opportunity adviser. "This is one of the many facets of putting our people first and recognizing who they are as human beings," said Sgt. Maj. Brian Sanders, senior enlisted leader of Army G-1's uniform policy branch, in a statement. "Their identity and diverse backgrounds are what makes the Army an ultimate fighting force." "It always perplexed me why the British Navy allowed their personnel the choice of facial hair while the Army applied this rule to the wearing of military kit, i.e interfering with the seal on the gas mask," suggested Bough. "Are the Royal Navy personnel not affected by the effects of gas? Just another peculiar foible that only the British could come up with."

"It doesn't necessarily have to be a color that is typically seen on a certain ethnic group. It just has to be a natural hair color" that presents a neat and professional image. Moreover, in the latter half of the 19th century, all ranks of the British Army were encouraged to grow large moustaches and even full beards during winter. For a while regulations were introduced that forbade serving soldiers of all ranks from shaving above their top lip, in essence making moustaches compulsory for those who could grow them.

The Army is planning a major overhaul of its hair and grooming regulations

It was only during the First World War that the British Army introduced orders that facial hair was not to be worn. The Army previously approved healthier hairstyle options that are more inclusive of various natural styles in an effort to stop hair damage and loss stemming from styles like the bun. Female soldiers can now wear highlights in their hair if the colors blend together naturally without a “vast difference” between the shades. Women soldiers can also now have short hair; shaved heads are now allowed for women, with minimum hair lengths erased in the latest update. The accessory must also be plain or a color similar to the natural hair color of the female soldier.

The slides go on to list the psychological impacts of hair loss and how a person’s quality of life is impacted by something like TA which can result in additional challenges like anxiety, depression, and poor body image. Long hair must be “neatly and inconspicuously fastened or pinned above the lower edge of the collar,” according to the regulations. “That image reinforced the same European standard of professionalism and beauty that had become mine as a girl; the natural me was not good enough,” Peters wrote. The recommendations were identified after a July directive from then-Secretary of Defense Mark Esper which ordered a review of hairstyle and grooming policies for racial bias. The new standards will also remove "potentially offensive and weaponized words and phrases" such as "Mohawk, Fu Manchu, dreadlock, eccentric, and faddish," the Army said in a statement. "Anytime there's a difference in regulations by gender, or sex, there is a tendency for the men to feel like they are not being treated equally," Segal said.

Medium hair is authorized when it falls naturally in uniform and does not have to be secured. It’s defined as a hair length that does not extend beyond the lower edge of the collar in all types of Army uniforms. It also helps foster an environment where soldiers feel proud and respectful about their daily appearance, adding to an overall feeling of self-worth.

There are numerous health care careers available through the Army Medical Education Deparment (AMEDD), including physicians, dentists, nurses, veterinarians, and many more. The Army Haircut Regulations apply to both men and women, though there are specific rules for each gender. It’s a safe and convenient alternative to expensive visits to a laser tattoo removal professional service.

Female Soldiers with medium-length hair will have the option to wear a ponytail if the individual's hair length or texture prevents them from securing it into a tight bun, Sanders said. A medium-length hairstyle must extend more than 1 inch from the scalp and cannot exceed the lower edge of the collar in all uniforms. One of the updates will authorize no minimum hair length for all personnel, to include making it an optional style for female Soldiers. Under the current policy, a Soldier's hair length can be no shorter than 1/4 inch from the scalp unless otherwise exempt due to a medical condition or injury. Army senior leaders approved several upcoming grooming and appearance modifications, said Sgt. Maj. Brian Sanders, senior enlisted leader of Army G-1’s uniform policy branch.

The exception is when used to cover natural baldness or physical dis-figuration caused by a medical procedure or accident. Tightly maintained and regulated Army grooming standards have been put in place by the U.S. The new policy will also remove various words from the regulation that are offensive to some cultures, or have racist ties. In the facial hair section of the regulations, the word “Fu Manchu” will be removed, for example, as it “has been considered offensive to Asian Culture,” the slides say.

They must have the same general appearance as the natural hair color and conform to standard hair regulations. Additional Army hair regulation updates remove the requirement that hair must present a tapered appearance. Multiple hairstyles are now allowed as long as it maintains a neat professional appearance and doesn’t impede the use of headgear. Previously, only buns were permitted for female soldiers with medium-length hair. The new standard will now allow them to tie their hair in a ponytail "if the individual's hair length or texture prevents them from securing it into a tight bun," the press release . The revisions were decided by a 17-soldier panel, including 15 women, who assessed grooming suggestions focused on health, wellness, diversity and inclusion of soldiers while keeping "professional appearance" in mind, the Army said.

The space is devoid of any blatant branding—there’s intentionally only hints of Chase’s signature blue. Instead, warm illumination, natural materials, and soft furnishings create a calming environment to unwind, regroup, and make merry ahead of an onward journey. At the center of the lounge, a large circular bar is conceived as a beacon and a place to gather. It’s fitted with bespoke brass taps, exquisitely tailored stools, and a quartzite countertop, and crowned with halo-like rings, evoking a “chandelier, or an amazing piece of jewelry,” Leanne Fremar, JPMorgan Chase chief brand officer, suggests. “It’s the very first thing people look for, a helpful wayfinding element,” Gee DiFurio adds. The de-stress process begins upon arrival, when guests are greeted by agents, then guided through a low corridor before emerging into a bright double-height volume—a sequence that exaggerates the feeling of compression and then opens up, explains Taglione.

A City Within a City: How Micro-City Design Breathes New Life into

In the design for the new airport UNStudio embraces this architectural concept in order to manifest Georgia’s young and dynamic democracy. The LAX modernisation programme also includes modernisation of some of the passenger terminals at the airport. The airport has a total of 25,000 parking spaces, including 8,000 slots in the central terminal and 11,000 in the long-term parking areas.

Neither party should overpower the other and all levels of involved personnel, from designers, operators and airlines, “right down to the trolley team”, have to be included in conversation. While still a member of Architects Declare, Foster + Partners was forced to defend the sustainable credentials of its glazed terminal building at Marseille Provence Airport after being challenged by France's Autorité Environnementale. Foster + Partners is aiming for this airport, under construction in the Saudi desert to serve the huge Red Sea Project tourist development, to achieve a LEED Platinum sustainability rating and be powered by 100 per cent renewable energy. Its exposed modular structure reduced waste during construction and means the building can be easily disassembled, recycled or extended in the future. Large V-shaped columns made from locally sourced timber will form the main structure of the terminal, while wood will also be used for the floors and ceilings reflecting Switzerland's alpine buildings.

Scheduled to be completed by 2025, the LAMP will create a direct connection between public transit and automated people mover (APM) station. A staircase sweeps up to the mezzanine, past a mix of live and faux plants cascading over the balconies, to a quieter space for reading and relaxation. From this level, also reachable via elevator, guests can access a trio of resort-inspired private suites offering such spa-like details as tiled baths, generous vanities, and rain showers “as if they were in a five-star hotel,” Fremar describes. The suites offer “everything you need to get ready for your destination,” she adds, noting that these facilities must be pre-booked in advance. The total area of the passenger terminals is 3.8 million square feet and that of the cargo terminals is about two million square feet.

Madrid-Barajas Airport Terminal 4 – Estudio Lamela & Rogers  Stirk Harbour + Partners

Completed in 2008, the terminal extension of the Marrakech Menara Airport in Morocco—designed by Swiss Architects E2A Architecture—uses a gorgeous facade that has become a hallmark of the airport. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Mumbai’s Terminal 2 building opened in 2014 to accommodate the city’s growing influx of visitors. A gigantic roof canopy references the form of vernacular Indian pavilions and is the centerpiece of the design. The ideal runway length is based on aircraft type, maximum take-off weight, engine performance, landing and braking performance, flap position, and required safety features. Having compiled an inventory of airport assets and examined their current state, planners may now assess whether or not the airport can handle the anticipated influx of passengers. With this in mind, we caught up with Mike Davies, founding partner and senior director at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, to find out more about where airport designers have been improving their methods and adding new considerations into designs.

To accommodate growth for the airline’s service, the VCE terminal was made to extend capacity to 15 million passengers a year. At the same time, the project needed to respect the historic fabric of Venice and the city’s fragile lagoon ecosystem. ZGF Architects has shared a new look at the main terminal of the Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon.

The airport has a highly efficient passive design, which has been inspired by local traditions, and is based on a flexible modular solution that allows for future expansion – the new building secures the city’s position as the main hub for the Levant region. In response to Amman’s climate, where summer temperatures vary markedly between day and night time, the building is constructed largely from concrete, the high thermal mass of the material providing passive environmental control. The tessellated roof canopy comprises a series of shallow concrete domes, which extend to shade the facades. Existing parking structures were to be demolished to make way for the expanded facility, with an intermodal centre at the southeast corner linking light rail and buses to 14,600 additional parking spaces.

After the public comment period ends May 1, UTA plans to refine a preferred concept by the end of August. Otherwise, the route matches the first proposed design, including realignment for the red line to serve the Granary District, and changes to the westernmost destinations for the green and blue lines. In UTA’s first proposed design, the orange line would extend from the campus to the airport via the existing Salt Lake Central Station. The public can comment on the design options through May 1, though transit times and cost estimates aren’t yet available for all the proposed routes. Aimed to increase terminal operations and passenger comfort, the MSC North facility will feature 12 wide-body gates, which are connected with moving walkways from TBIT through a 1,000ft tunnel corridor. A new runway status lighting system worth $7m has been installed to increase airfield safety.

After Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupted in Iceland back in 2010, the country feared it would impact travel. Instead, travelers from around the world flooded into Iceland, and in turn, there was a need to expand Keflavik airport once again. The new terminal the team designed the expansion to accommodate a system where passengers move to and from the aircrafts by remote stands.

The vertical movement of passengers is located between the canyons to indicate the sequence of actions that the passenger needs to carry out as per airport formalities. Often known for the best airport designs in the world, the Changi Airport at Singapore designed by the master architect Moshie Safdie is one of the largest transportation hubs in Southeast Asia. To accommodate the increasing traffic of air travel, terminal 3 (change airport) was constructed. What makes it more unique, is the combination of the two environments – a marketplace and a paradise garden creating a community-centric typology of heart and soul.

Although much smaller than many airports on this list with about two million passengers annually, Samui Airport is notable for its open-air design and use of local materials like palm wood, and rattan. The first airport project designed by Rome-based architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, the new Terminal 3 building at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport in China was built to look like a manta ray from above. Opened in 1994 to relieve overcrowding at Osaka International Airport, Kansai International Airport was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano.

In addition to utilizing different systems, staff would be required to undergo sessions of training to understand the new protocols and functions of a sustainable airport. Additionally, because there aren’t many airports that have applied net zero carbon neutral functions, stakeholders tread lightly when it comes to such changes. The second challenge with designing a net zero airport is devising a plan for a site in order to generate the amount of energy that will be needed for the entire airport. Whether the energy is generated by a solar powered field that is on-site, or not, there must be a site somewhere to offset the emissions. The same process would likely be required to reach the goal of becoming a carbon neutral building as well. With a growing focus on the environmental impact of aviation, architects are designing a new generation of airports focused on sustainability.
